ANC Youth leader, Collen Malatjie, is calling on Tshwane residents to shut down foreign-owned spaza shops that aren’t following the rules.
He made the call at a mass protest by members of the ANC this afternoon.
It comes as concerns grow over food poisoning cases across the country.
In the latest incident, over 100 learners across schools in the Free State have been hospitalised following suspected food poisoning.
It’s led to mass demonstrations in townships, including Soweto, Alexandra and Bronkhorstspruit.
Malatjie believes citizens need to take action, especially with the recent spike in food poisoning.
On Friday, Tshwane authorities, led by Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya, raided non-compliant spaza shops in the capital, confiscating or destroying expired goods.
Several shops have since been shut down.
In another development, the Gauteng Education Department has suspended food sales inside and around schools due to the alarming outbreaks.
ANC Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, says spaza shops must be closed down and re-opened through a regulatory framework.
He’s called on government to lead the approach, and for society to support it.
