International relations expert, Professor Siphamandla Zondi, believes that US President-elect Donald Trump offers something different to traditional politicians.

He was reacting to the Republican’s victory the Democrat candidate, Kamala Harris, whose dream of becoming America’s first female President was dashed in the race.

Trump was declared as the 47th US President after winning 277 electoral votes.

Zondi says he doesn’t think that Trump’s heading back to the White House will have much of an impact in the relations that South Africa and the US have.

The 78-year-old, who is making a remarkable political comeback four years after leaving the White House, has been given a second chance by Americans.

In the lead up to the unprecedented event, Trump survived two assassination attempts and his original opponent President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race just months before election day.

Speaking in Florida, Trump described his return to the Oval Office as the greatest win for Americans.

Vice President, Kamala Harris, went underground as the counting took place and called off all her speaking announcements, which left many of her supporters in tears and confused.

The defeat marks the second time in eight years that a woman became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee only to fall short of a barrier-breaking victory.

Trump will only be sworn-in as President on the 20th of January as specified in the US Constitution’s 20th amendment.

Declaring his own victory before the official results, Trump spoke about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the war between the Ukraine and Russia.

He expressed lack of interest in starting any war.

Economist at Stellenbosch Business School, Professor Andre Roux, however, believes the Trump administration is not what South Africa needs at the moment.

He says the new US government is likely to impose tariffs on Pretoria’s imports, exacerbating economic woes for the country’s masses.

The Professor also believes that, as Africa’s biggest trading partner, China will also bear the brunt of America’s choice of its first citizen.

World leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and UK Prime minister, Keir Starmer, were among the first to take to social media, congratulating Trump.

Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump. Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.

As Trump’s camp celebrates the feat, some in the US are, however, not impressed.

Political analyst, Van Jones, describes Trump’s win as a nightmare for black women, and illegal immigrants.

The President elect’s win also comes as he faces some criminal charges, a first for any American president-elect.

Trump was in May convicted on 34 felony charges in his New York criminal trial for falsifying business records to cover up a payment to adult film actress, Stormy Daniels, before the 2016 election.

His sentencing was moved from September to the 26th of this month. However, it now remains to be seen whether the trial will go ahead as planned.

The US President-elect also faces four charges in federal court in Washington for allegedly spreading false claims of election fraud to try to block the collection and certification of votes following the 2020 election, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden, amongst others.

On social media, there have different views on the US election outcome.
