The mother of 6-year-old Eva Tembo, who was kidnapped by her employer for close to four months, says she trusted Carlos Rebelo and never thought he would ever do something like that.
Speaking to YNews, Lola Khana could not stop expressing her gratitude that her daughter was finally back in her arms.
She says she had been worried sick, not knowing whether Eva was safe.
The little girl was returned safely to her parents yesterday after Rebelo handed her over to his lawyer in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The 72-year-old had disappeared with the child in July, without her parents’ permission and in defiance of a court order.
He remains on the run.
It’s alleged that he took Eva after her parents told him of their plans to visit their relatives in Malawi.
Khana says Rebelo thought because he was paying Eva’s school fees, they would be okay with him taking the child.
She says they feel betrayed by his actions as they had thought that he was just being generous and helping them from the kindness of his heart.
As police investigations continue and the search for the 72-year-old gains momentum, Khana says he has been communicating with them over the phone, but they have no idea where he might be.
The young Malawian national says Rebelo’s daughter, Susana Kennedy, is also elated that the 6-year-old is back home.
Kennedy drew attention to the kidnap by using her social media to call for the child’s safe return.
Organisation for missing children, the Pink Ladies, has urged parents to never ignore their gut feelings on people close to their children.
The Pink Ladies had been working closely with law enforcement officials to help find the 6-year-old.
The organisation’s director, Jacs Thomas, advises parents to always be alert and not wait until it’s too late to report their children missing.
