Education activist, Hendrick Makaneta, says the “sex for marks” scandal that has rocked the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is symptomatic of a broader societal issue and the pervasive culture of sexual harassment.
An engineering lecturer at the university has been suspended over allegations of trading marks for sexual favours and money.
It is alleged that the lecturer would charge between R4 000 and R5 000 per subject or pay by having sex with him, for female students.
Makaneta says the abuse of power and exploitation of students should not be tolerated.
He has called on MUT to prioritise their safety.
“The MUT administration must take decisive action to address these allegations, ensuring a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible. Anything less would be a betrayal of the trust placed in the institution by its students, staff, and the broader community.”
Makaneta has bemoaned the pervasive culture of sexual harassment and exploitation that plagues educational institutions.
“It is imperative that we confront this reality head-on, acknowledging the power dynamics at play and the devastating consequences for victims,” he says.
He has also called on the university to keep the community informed about the progress of investigations and actions taken against perpetrators.
The institution says a thorough investigation is underway.
MUT’s Zama Sishi says the university takes these allegations very seriously.
“The University has intentionally kept this matter confidential, as maintaining trust and protecting individuals’ rights are of the utmost importance.”
While this scandal has led to concerns over the questionable graduates that the university produces, Shishi says the public should not be alarmed.
“We continue to prioritise the integrity of our institution and the quality of the graduates we produce. Our Faculty of Engineering has produced industry leaders making significant contributions to the nation’s economy,” she adds.
