The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stepped in on the impasse caused by the Nigerian national team’s decision to boycott their 2025 CAF qualifier with Libya, which was scheduled for tonight.
The Super Eagles prematurely returned home after being left stranded at an Airport in Libya, two hours from the match venue.
Their move prompted a response from CAF.
“CAF has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.” said CAF in a statement.
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”
The standoff has also caused diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and Libya, with the Nigerian Foreign Ministry having summoned Libya’s charge d’affaires in Abuja.
The conversation on the issue is also rolling online.
The Libyan Football Federation says it will take legal action against the Nigerian team for pulling out of their game.
