Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, is backing his teammate, Ronwen Williams, to win the prestigious Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or Awards.

Onyango believes Williams can make history and become the first African to win the award since its inception in 2019.

Senegal keeper, Édouard Mendy, came second behind Gianluigi Donnarumma three years ago.

“It’s incredible and for a goalkeeper he has done an incredible job. It’s not easy for an African player to be part of the Ballon d’Or nominations. It’s massive and I’m honoured to be working with him,” said Onyango when he addressed the media ahead of Sundowns’ CAF Champions League against eSwatini’s Mbabane Swallows.

The former Uganda international feels that Williams did better compared to the other nominees.

“Of course, he stands a big chance because, looking at his performance at the Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier this year], it was incredible, leading the team to third spot is massive.”

“He won the AFL with Sundowns and (there is) the impact he made when he was playing and in the (domestic) league. Looking at the keepers he’s nominated with, I think he stands a better chance but it’s not for us to judge.”

The awards are scheduled to take place on the 28th of next month. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
