Defence lawyer, Thulani Mngomezulu, made the assertion during the cross-examination of ballistic expert, Chris Mangena.
Mangena, who first testified in August last year, is back on the witness stand after delays caused by a dispute over who should pay for the defence’s ballistics expert, who will challenge his testimony.
According to Mangena’s expert testimony, two bullets extracted from the murder scene indicated that only two shots were fired that night.
However, Mngomezulu claims that three shots were fired; two that injured Longwe Twala and Kelly Khumalo’s sister, Zandile, while the other killed Meyiwa.
Mngomezulu further alleged that Longwe sought medical treatment for the ankle-wound, which had become septic, and one of the bullets was retrieved during his treatment.
During a heated cross-examination, Mangena confirmed that police had analysed Chicco Twala’s firearm in the days following the gruesome murder and investigated allegations that Twala shot Meyiwa with his father’s gun.
It’s the defences version that the music producer’s son shot and killed the footballer before fleeing the scene.
However, the state maintains that the five men on trial were involved in an organised hit on Meyiwa’s life.
Mangena’s cross-examination continues.
