Political analyst, Goodenough Mashego, says the ANC should come down harder on Joburg Mayor, Dada Morero, over his proposal that government hire foreign nationals to assist them in curbing crime.

Mashego says the assertions show that there is no proper caucus within the party.

“For him as a mayor for the biggest metro in the country to come out and say something that’s contrary to what the provincial leadership is about shows a disconnect on a political level,” adds the political analyst.

Morero came under fire after a video of him suggesting that migrants be employed as Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers during the ANC’s Lekgotla was leaked.

Morero has since withdrawn his proposal and apologised for the frustration it caused, saying his suggestion was not consistent with the policies of the ANC and government.

ANC Gauteng Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, has also apologised to Joburgers, saying the proposal will not be entertained any further.

However, Mashego believes, this isn’t enough.

He says the government should rather consider recruiting migrants as spies to assist crime intelligence officers.

Several political parties have also weighed in on the conversation, with some questioning the mayor based his research on.
