South Africa’s most successful football coach, Pitso Mosimane, received an honorary doctorate at the University of Johannesburg’s graduation ceremony today.

Mosimane joins the likes of Desiree Ellis, Rassie Erasmus and Jomo Cosmos owner, Jomo Sono, on the exclusive list of South African sports people who have received this particular honour.

Other honorary doctors – former SAFA President, Molefi Oliphant, his successor, Danny Jordaan, and Sono were also on the stage as the former Bafana Bafana, Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach was honoured.

Members of Mosimane’s technical team, his family and some of his African football coaching colleagues, including Aliou Cisse, Florent Ibenge and Kalusha Bwalya, were also in attendance.

Speaking on the honour, Mosimane says he never thought football would open so many doors for him.

“We’re ordinary people, we come from football, and when the academics acknowledge and appreciate us, you feel like ‘is it really happening?’ because the academics acknowledge us, it’s a humbling feeling. Football has changed my narrative,” he said. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
