The driver of the bakkie that rammed into a Carletonville scholar transport, causing it to overturn and catch fire, killing 11 learners and their driver, has been released on R20 000 bail.
Gert Van Emmenis briefly appeared before the Fochville Magistrate Court today for culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.
He returns to the same court on the 15th of October.
The youngest of his victims was seven years old.
Earlier this week friends, families and community members gathered at the Grace Bible church in Carltonville to pay their respects to the deceased.
The uncle of four of the learners, Aviva Manqa, struggled to contain his emotions.
He told mourners that it’s been tough for them as a family.
It’s not clear when the children will be laid to rest, but a joint funeral is anticipated for them.
