The Investigating Officer in the case against the murder-accused couple, Sibusiso and Lerato Mahlangu, has described how Lerato was crying and unable to speak after allegedly murdering the father of her child.
Officer Michael Nchaupe Meselane took to the stand as the next witness in the couple’s fraud and murder trial.
The Mahlangus are accused of murdering Lerato’s ex-lover and father of her child, Sibusiso Sithebe, and using his body as a decoy in a brazen insurance scam.
They’re accused of luring Sithebe to their home on New Year’s Day in 2022, getting him drunk, dousing him in petrol and ultimately burning him alive.
They claimed R500 000 from their life insurer, Old Mutual, allegedly faking Mahlangu’s death.
Their scam was, however, cut short in April of that same year when Mahlangu was arrested while in possession of a stolen car, exposing him as a “dead” man.
In his testimony, Meselane confirmed he had indeed met and interviewed the accused during this period.
Lerato, through her defence lawyer, had previously alleged that she and Sithebe were having an affair at the time of his death, spinning a dark web of a love triangle that potentially turned deadly.
The trial continues on Wednesday.
