Some workers at Joel’s Swedo panel beating workshop in Midrand, where a fire broke out yesterday morning, have dismissed an electrical fault as the cause of the devastating blaze.

As investigations into the fire get underway, some employees suspect foul play.

One employee, who spoke to YNews on condition of anonymity, said the workshop has no electrical wiring, making an electrical fault unlikely.

The fire, which broke out at around 7am yesterday, has left a trail of destruction, with charred vehicles piling up outside the workshop, which also serves as a foam factory.

Owner Joel Mamabolo was left visibly shaken by the sight of charred and gutted cars outside the damaged warehouse and was reluctant to speak with YNews.

His friends and business partners say they don’t know how they’ll survive the difficult winter months given the heavy knock to their business.

The question of who will cover the cost of the damage to customers’ cars also remains unanswered.

One affected worker, a Malawian national, told YNews he’s no longer sure how he’ll be able to afford to feed his struggling family.

Despite witnessing the devastation, he’s relieved that no one was hurt in the incident.

As temperatures continue to plummet, the Johannesburg Emergency Services has cautioned residents to use heating and electrical appliances with caution, while they look into the cause of the blaze. Written by Naomi Kobbie
