IEC’s Granville Abrahams has hailed South Africans, who were relentless and stood their ground in making sure that they cast their ballots despite the mishaps at polling stations, as heroes.

Vote counting is underway in South Africa’s most contested polls since the dawn of democracy.

Millions of South Africans stood in long lines to cast their ballots, some until the early hours of this morning.

Abrahams says some stations closed at least 02 o’clock this morning to complete counting.

Young people were among the millions of Sout Africans across the country who flocked to their voting stations in queues some say brought nostalgia of the 1994 elections.

Final results are expected at the weekend. Written by Lindiwe Mpanza
