The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in Limpopo is mourning the passing of at least 10 teachers who lost their lives in a head-on collision eary this morning.
The teachers were on their way to work in Senwabarana when the taxi they were travelling in crashed head-on with a truck R-521 road in Kalkapank outside Polokwane.
Both drivers also perished in the incident.
Sadtu’s provincial secretary, Sowell Tjebane, says the tragedy has left them numb, as many of the educators who lost their lives were members of the union.
Tjebane sent his heartfelt condolences to the teachers’ families, saying he cannot comprehend the pain they are going through.
The Limpopo Sadtu secretary says the accident came at a critical time when schools are undergoing their mid-year examinations.
He is worried that learners at the Senwabarwana Primary School may struggle to accept the loss of their teachers.
Tjebane has called upon all road users to exercise caution and restraint when driving on public roads.
Limpopo Transport MEC Florence Radzilani is among those who rushed to the scene of accident.
Her spokesperson, Vongani Chauke, says she is still reeling from shock.
Chauke refused to comment any further on the matter, requesting that they be given time to assess the accident report from Emergency personnel on the scene. Written by Bukuta Nkuna
