The Constitutional Court has agreed to hear the IEC’s urgent appeal against Jacob Zuma’s MK Party.

The Electoral Commission approached the Apex Court for clarity over an Electoral Court ruling, which gave the former president the greenlight to possibly return to the National Assembly after the May 29 elections.

Zuma’s MK Party has until tomorrow to file its arguments in court, in a matter some believe might be heard before next month’s mostly contested polls since the dawn of democracy.

The IEC had requested the Electoral Court to furnish it with reasons behind its decision to allow Zuma to stand for public office despite a previous conviction which disqualifies him from running in the upcoming elections.

The court is, however, yet to do so, something political economic analyst, Professor Sam Koma, says won’t really have any bearing on the IEC’s case.

Koma believes the ConCourt has done well to agree to hear the controversial case, which some fear that South Africa could see scenes that played out in July 2021 when Zuma handed himself over to the authorities for defying a Constitutional Court order which had directed him to return to the Zondo Commission and finish his testimony on the alleged large-scale corruption that took place during his presidential tenure.

Social media is meanwhile abuzz with all kinds of insinuations and conspiracy theories.
