What was supposed to be a kind gesture by the Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister, Zizi Kodwa, has taken a different turn, sparking debate over the government’s perceived lack of support for artists.
Kodwa drew flak from some social media users on X, after wishing a South African Opera singer, based in Britain, well for his outstanding performance on the Britain’s Got Talent television show.
South African creatives continue to raise the country’s flag high around the world. I congratulate Innocent Masuku on his sterling performance in Britain’s Got Talent. All the best as you proceed in the competition! @CyrilRamaphosa @SportArtsCultur @BGT

One of the most notable comments was that of South African actress, Katlego Danke, who chimed: “I’d love to see us celebrating all the artists, their talents and gifts and supporting them before they are celebrated or ‘discovered’ abroad.”
Two-time author, Nicole Barlow, also used the opportunity to respond to the Minister’s tweet, saying: “What on earth did you do? He had to flee this crime ridden cesspit and go to another country to be afforded this opportunity. Don’t be pathetic and think you can bask in this man’s glory. Go to hell!”
The Department of Arts and Culture has been getting criticism for years now for allegedly not doing enough to support artists. Several scandals over the misappropriation of monies meant for artists and the alleged politicisation of boards and leadership in the sector have also not helped the situation for government.
However, Kodwa’s spokesperson, Litha Mpondwana, says limited knowledge of the depth of government’s efforts to help artists grow in the country are, largely, to blame for such claims.
“The Department of Arts, Sport and Culture and its entities have many programmes and interventions which support and build capacity to the country’s cultural and creative sectors.”
He says the focus has been to support the sectors from grassroots levels and create jobs. Written by Odirile Rabalao
