South Africans are mourning the passing of popular DJ and MC, Peter β€œMashata” Mabuse.

The DJ was shot dead in the early hours of yesterday morning on his way from EpoziniLifestyle, in block G Soshanguve, where he played his last gig.

He was travelling with his friend when tragedy struck.

Klaas Mabela escaped the incident with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder.

The police say they are investigating the motive for the murder.

This while Mashata’s relatives, friends and fans struggle to come to terms with the brutal manner in which his life was cut short.

Mashata also worked at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) as a Residence Advisor for both the Pretoria and Ga-Rankuwa campuses.

“His varied community engagement activities – e.g. as MC and as Stadium Announcer at Mamelodi Sundowns home matches – had a positive impact on society beyond the gates of the University. The University is providing the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues and students with as much support as we can at this difficult time,” says the institution in a statement.

Requesting that the DJ’s relatives be afforded the space and the time to process their loss, TUT has also urged the public, including the media, to exercise restraint and sensitivity towards the creative’s loved ones.

“Our deepest condolences go to the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues and TUT students,” it adds.

Mashata’s murder occurred almost two years after his friend, DJ Sumbody, also died in a hail of bullets in a suspected hit.

It has also brought the debate on gun violence back to the spotlight, raising concerns about the rising assassinations in the country.

According to the police, gun-related murders increased by 35% during the 2022-2023 reporting period – sparking calls for more to be done to curb the scourge.
