The Fleurs family says they have forgiven the people responsible for the murder of Kaizer Chiefs defender, Luke Fleurs.
Six suspects believed to be involved in the 24-year-old’s brutal murder appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrates Court earlier today.
The suspect’s ages range from 21 to 36.
Ndumiso Mswane, Fernando Sive, Nhlakanipho Dlamini, Franky Xaba, Maredi Mphahlele, and Thembinkosi Hlomikhawu face five charges, namely murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and defeating the ends of justice.
Luke’s father, Theo Fleurs, and his elder brother, Joshua, were present at the court and addressed the media after proceedings. Joshua says the family has forgiven the people who took his brother’s life.
“On behalf of the family, we forgive those who have done wrong by my brother, but we don’t want any bail (for them). We just want justice for him,” he said.
All six of the suspects have opted to get Legal Aid for representation and intend on applying for bail, which the NPA has said it will oppose.
The matter was postponed to next week Friday for the bail hearing, which is just a day before the Olympian is set to be buried.
‘Ever smiling’
Yesterday, Chiefs hosted a memorial service for the slain defender. His family, friends and now former teammates all paid moving tributes to the fallen defender, remembering him as one who was ever smiling and a person of the people.
SuperSport midfielder, Jesse Donn, knew Fleurs from the age of 12, as they came through the Ubuntu Cape Town Academy together, and both ended up signing for SuperSport United before Fleurs moved to Chiefs in October of 2023.
“He was a striker then and he still liked to remind you of that! Little did I know that in the next 12 years he would become a friend and a brother and someone who would creep into my heart,” said Donn.
“This week I was speaking to a few teammates, and we miss his dance moves, his jokes, and his ability to wear the same clothes for multiple days,” he added.
Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Manager, Jessica Motaung, has called on South Africans and authorities to act, and try to curb in the country.
“What happened to Luke wasn’t fair. We need to all do something to change this country, crime is not right, we need to do something. Luke’s situation has really put this in the spotlight, and we trust the leaders and politicians in this country will heed the call.” she said.
