SuperSport United coach, Gavin Hunt, has described the passing of Kaizer Chiefs defender, Luke Fleurs, as a big loss for South African football.

Fleurs was shot and killed in a hijacking in Honeydew, Johannesburg, last week.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, confirmed yesterday that six people have been arrested in connection with the killing of the 24-year-old former youth international.

“What happened to Luke is an absolute tragedy. We heard the news on Wednesday night last week after it happened,” Hunt said.

“A lot has already been said, and I don’t want to go there, but he had a big career ahead of him; he was a young boy, and, in his position, I always say centre-backs only mature at the age of 30 or older.

“If you look at the best centre-backs in the world right now, they are all over the age of 30.

“So, he had a long way to go, and I am sure that he would have had a very good career, especially at Chiefs. So, his passing is a tragedy and a big loss.”

Chiefs will host an official memorial service for the slain footballer at the FNB Stadium today. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
