The Telkom Netball League (TNL) has found a new home. Netball South Africa and the City of Johannesburg have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will see the 2024 edition of the tournament take place at the Ellis Park Arena from the 26th of this moth to 23 June.
The signing ceremony took place at the Johannesburg Theatre and was conducted by NSA President, Cecilia Molokwane, and CoJ MMC for Community Development Councillor, Lubabalo Magwentshu.
Speaking at the ceremony, Magwentshu also allayed safety fears pertaining to the Ellis Park precinct.
The area around the iconic stadium has been a topic of conversation of late with safety being a major concern as it is in downtown Johannesburg, where crime is rife and robberies happen in broad daylight.
“We’ll be using the Ellis Park Arena, the team from Netball South Africa together with our team from Sports and Recreation went across the city, showing which venues are suitable for netball but the team from NSA was more than happy with Ellis Park Arena,” said Magwentshu.

“I think some things are being exaggerated, safety is a concern across the country and as such, each and every government has a responsibility to ensure that there is safety for it’s citizens and as CoJ we will ensure that we deploy extra JMPD officials to ensure that we deal with whatever criminal elements they may be so we don’t have issues where people say we can’t go to watch netball because there’s crime around that are, no.”
Molokwane is also pleased with the new feat.
“Today we are here witnessing history in the making. We have never had an MoU signing ceremony with a city hosting one of our tournaments before, (apart from the 2023 World Netball World Cup in Cape Town,)” she said.
