Former National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula’s friends and relatives have arrived at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in a show of support – ahead of her bail application.

Her husband, Charles Nqakula, seemed calm and collected as he arrived at court.

His embattled wife faces one corruption count and 12 corruption charges involving over R4 million in bribes allegedly solicited from a contractor between 2017 and 2019 while she was Defence Minister.

Mapisa-Nqakula handed herself over to police this morning following her failed attempt to block her arrest.

In another show of solidarity- former Deputy President Baleka Mbete was at the Lyttelton Police Station- where the former Defence Minister surrendered herself.

Mbete has described the corruption allegations levelled against her friend and comrade as a deliberate ploy to discredit the former National Assembly Speaker.

The media has been given the green light to live broadcast court proceedings. Written by Naomi Kobbie
