Tributes are flooding in for Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs, who tragically lost his life in a hijacking last night.

According to the police, Fleurs (24) was shot and killed before his car was hijacked in Honeydew, Johannesburg.

In a statement, police say he had just drove into a petrol station at 14th Avenue, corner Hendrik Potgieter Road, in his red VW Golf 8 GTI when tragedy struck.

“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series. The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice,” the statement reads.

Following the incident, Fleurs was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival.

“One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice. Police have opened a case of murder and car hijacking for investigation, and no arrests have been made yet,” says Police Spokesperson, Mavela Masondo.

Fleurs began his soccer career in 2013 when he joined the Ubuntu Cape Town Academy before later joining SuperSport United, and Kaizer Chiefs as a free-agent in October 2023.

His passing has sparked anger over the high levels of violent crime in the country.

According to the latest crime statistics, about 86 people are murdered every day, three of whom are children.
