At the back of the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial today, young people have slammed Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng’s comments about black lawyers as damaging to the profession.
Defense lawyer, Thulani Mngomezulu, received a scolding from the judge after failing to attend court proceedings.
It’s understood the lawyer had been attending to a separate matter, and requested that evidence be led in his absence.
However, Mokgoatlheng appeared visibly frustrated at the suggestion, questioning the seriousness of some black lawyers.
“Is this how lawyers, black lawyers, maybe we should just tell the truth…is this how black lawyers behave,” the judge said as he addressed the courtroom.
Yires say Mokgoatlheng’s comments have given ammunition to those who may want to discredit black professionals.
They added that the remarks were particularly hurtful, coming from one of their own.
Five men are currently on trial for the Bafana Bafana captains murder.
The celebrated footballer was gunned down at his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo’s home in October 2014.
The matter resumes on Friday when a new witness will take to the stand. Written by Naomi Kobbie
