The South African lawyers, gearing up to file a lawsuit against the governments of the US and UK, say their case is about getting financial compensation for the victims of Israel’s war on Gaza.
Nearly 50 South African lawyers are set to take the western powers to court for what they’ve described as complicity in Israeli war crimes in the Palestinian territory.
It comes as the world awaits the International Court of Justice’s ruling into South Africa’s genocide case against the Middle Eastern country.
Attorney Wikus Van Rensburg, whose leading the team, spoke with YNews.
He says the lawsuit is about helping civilians in Gaza rebuild their lives.
One political analyst, Professor John Stremlau, has slammed the move as irresponsible, because it’s not been sanctioned by the South African government.
Van Rensburg has, however, rubbished Stremlau’s claims, saying the lawsuit won’t sour Pretoria’s diplomatic relations with the western powers.
Nearly 24 000 people have reportedly lost their lives following Israel’s retaliation to Hamas’s October 7th attack, while at least 60 000 others have been injured, many of them women and children.
