Former Y alumni have paid tribute to the late DJ Nhlamulo Hlungwani, popularly known as DJ Mulo, describing him as a legend due to his work ethic and passion.

DJ Mulo passed away at the weekend after a long battle with cancer.

Some industry colleagues and friends, including Sizwe Dhlomo, have praised him for having fought a good fight.

One of Y’s longest serving personalities Moleke Sekukuni, popularly known as DJ Just Mo, says he met Mulo back in 2009 through the academy.

Just Mo says Mulo was more than just a colleague. He describes him as a loving friend, who he gigged with around Joburg.

Y’s Head of Production, Nhlakanipho Ndlovu, says Mulo was like an older brother to him, as he joined the Y Academy after the late DJ had already secured a show on the station as the host for the Top 40.

Media entrepreneur and former Y talent, who also came through from the academy, Bridgette Makhela, has also shared how Mulo was a warm loving person who always made those around him feel safe and comfortable.

Makhela says Hlungwani was always willing to help and give advice to anyone who would come to him for guidance.

The Y Academy has produced some of the country’s most celebrated radio personalities as it offered South Africa’s most sought-after radio training programme.

Some of these big names include, Trevor Noah, DJ Warras and Sizwe Dhlomo.
