Former ANC anti-apartheid activist and ARETA leader, Carl Niehaus, has joined the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Niehaus joins Julius Malema’s party ahead of the 2024 national elections.

This comes 10 months after he formed his own political party, African Radical Economic Transformation Alliance (ARETA), shortly after leaving the ANC.

Niehaus says his move is in line with their goal to re-shape the political landscape in South Africa.

He says the plan has always been to usher in a new government that is committed to the people.

Political analyst, Levy Ndou, says Niehaus’s latest move is another indicator of how parties are committing to unseating the ANC in the upcoming polls.

Ndou says the main focus for most political parties is winning the elections even if coalitions must be formed.

“In this era where there is a possibility of coalitions, you would expect different political parties to start working together, aligning themselves to each other, in order to be able to work together now and post 2024.”

He says it’s not surprising that Niehaus decided to join forces with the EFF.

Ndou adds that this is something you would expect from people who left the ANC and wouldn’t want to see it succeed next year.

EFF’s deputy president , Floyd Shivambu, welcomed Niehaus to the party – saying they don’t doubt his revolutionary struggle credentials.

“We appreciate the call of unity of all progressive Left Forces because the white capitalist establishment is working day and night to consolidate the unity of reactionary rightwing forces.”

Shivambu believes they will emerge victorious because they represent the working class majority.
