Controversial Sizokuthola host, Xolani Khumalo, has maintained his innocence after being charged with the murder of suspected drug-dealer Robert Varrie.

YNews caught up with the television presenter at the back of his court appearance today.

Proceedings had to be postponed as the Director of Public Prosecutions is yet to decide on whether the matter should be trialed in the high court. It is currently being heard at the Palm Ridge Magistrate Court.

Khumalo’s supporters came out in their numbers, many of whom took to the streets in stern solidarity with the murder accused.

Despite the looming charges, anti-drug activists say they’ll continue to sing the TV presenter’s praises.

Khumalo says the level of support he’s received is a testament to how fed up South Africans are with the scourge of drug abuse.

YNews also spoke with the deceased’s family, a good many of whom attended court.

They say despite Varrie’s run-ins with the law – his punishment simply did not fit the crime.

They say Khumalo is holding himself above the law, and have accused the TV host of parading his celebrity status.

Khumalo returns to court on the 21st of November. Article by Naomi Kobbie
