Professor of Politics and International Relations at UJ, Siphamandla Zondi, says mediation is needed to end the tit for tat battle between Israel and Palestine.
More than 700 Israelis died over the weekend after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel.
Professor Zondi says while the loss of life is indisputably unacceptable, Jerusalem isn’t completely innocent in the matter.
As Israeli drafts its reservists, the scholar says the continued retaliations by both sides will not yield the peace both countries’ leaders’ desire.
Zondi alleges that the US is to blame for under-riding the peace process in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
He says the US has the strongest power and influence on the key powers in that region, but it has not played the role that its power allows.
Prof Zondi has not also minced his words for the South African government, saying its response it typical.

Labour federation, Saftu, says it will be picketing against Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine on Wednesday.

The federation has joined several organisations in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Saftu’s spokesperson, Trevor Shaku, says the South African government must end all sports, cultural and academic activities linked with Israel.

Political analyst, Professor Sam Koma, says it is commendable that the South African government has openly condemned the attack on the Gaza Strip by Hamas, calling for an end to the violence.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), along with political parties and civil rights organisations, have joined come out in one voice – calling for an immediate cease-fire and peace talks amid the renewed conflict.

Koma says while the UN has on several occasions denounced the violence in the area, the UN Security Council, must pronounce on a need for the two sides to find lasting peace.
