Mthokozisi Thwala has described his deep sense of skepticism and discomfort heading to singer Kelly Khumalo’s home in the moments leading up to Senzo Meyiwa’s shooting.

He’s the sixth state witness to have taken to the stand in the footballer’s rebooted murder trial.

Thwala was among those present at the Khumalo home the night Meyiwa was gunned down in, what he alleges, was a botched robbery.

He’s detailed a long-standing friendship with the footballer’s estranged wife, Mandisa Mkhize, who he’d known since primary school.

He says despite his close relationship with Meyiwa, he had not been eager to visit the home of his then girlfriend, Kelly, on that fateful night for fear of betraying Mkhize.

In the aftermath of Meyiwa’s shooting, the footballer’s friend has detailed being paralysed by grief.

Left at the hospital unable to break the news of the murder to Meyiwa’s wife, Thwala says Khumalo was forced to notify her romantic rival by a phone call.

Thwala further detailed how police allegedly beat and brutalised him, plainly accusing him of having some part in the footballer’s murder.

These remarks were met with a less than sympathetic chuckle from some of the accused in the dock.
