Police in Gauteng are investigating the death of one fighter at the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) birthday celebration.
The deceased was among the thousands of EFF supporters who gathered at the FNB stadium on Saturday.
It is alleged that the deceased fell to his death while dancing on the grand stands.
Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says authorities have obtained statements from eyewitnesses.
“Police have opened an inquest docket for investigation after a man allegedly fell from level five to level two and died at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg in the evening of Saturday,” he says.
The EFF has extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
“The leadership of the EFF will visit the family of the deceased, and take care of all funeral arrangements in honour of his life, a someone who formed part of the historic celebration of our movement.”
The leader of the red berets, Julius Malema, led the prestigious celebration in song and a gripping address to his supporters.
UDM’s president, Bantu Holomisa, ATM’s Vuyolwethu Zungula and King Buyelekhaya Dalinyebo are some South African leaders who also attended the event.
