More than 10,000 children have voted and agreed. Families rule! Entries in watercolour, koki pen, pencil and wax crayon from across the country poured in for the SPAR Inland Family Portraits competition, and 60 young artists have now been selected – their works of art soon to be featured on the sides of SPAR Inland delivery trucks.

Open to all children between the ages of six and ten, the SPAR Inland Family Portraits competition entry mechanic was simple: create your best, brightest, happiest family portrait, tell a short story about the portrait, and drop off your entry at your nearest SPAR.

Over 10,000 family portraits were entered in the 322 participating SPAR stores.

“We were so excited when the entries started pouring in,” says Ashleigh Eden, Advertising Manager of SPAR North Rand. “For us, SPAR is about families. They are the backbone of our business and of the communities we serve, and children are just the heart and soul of every family. Working through the entries was a journey of discovery and enjoyment that gave us incredible insights into the lives of young South Africans”.

“The submissions included everything from families enjoying meals together, happy families on outings, and even drawings of moms and daughters togged up in their running gear at the start of the SPAR Ladies Race. The colourful entries, together with the written explanations, left us us in no doubt as to how important moms, dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts – and family pets – are to our children”, continues Eden.

The work of the 60 finalists, will now be printed larger-than-life and feature on 10 SPAR delivery trucks that travel across the country.

“We can’t wait to bring the happiness and brightness our children feel when they think about the families to our busy roads and towns. Our SPAR Inland Family Portraits artists told us that families are important, and a source of sharing and happiness that is hard to find elsewhere. We are happy to share this with everyone, and hope that the trucks featuring the family portraits will bring smiles to the faces of all who see them”.

For the 60 winners, the excitement doesn’t end there. They will become junior VIP celebrities at their local SPAR store. Each will receive a certificate and R1,000 SPAR voucher. For three junior artists whose names will be drawn randomly, their SPAR celebrations will be shared with their schools, which will each receive R10,000 to be used for the benefit of all.
