COVID-19: SA records biggest hike in cases

South Africa has reached a grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting 3 267 new cases, the biggest single-day spike yet.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stand at 40 792.

“The number of deaths also increased drastically with 56 people succumbing to the deadly virus. More than 820 000 people have been tested for the virus in the country”, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said in a statement on Thursday evening.

The Eastern Cape now exceeded Gauteng by 91 cases, which brings the total number of cases in the province to 4 936. There are 4 845 infections of the respiratory disease in Gauteng.

The Western Cape remains the epicentre of the virus, recording 27 006 cases.

“The Department of Health has since extended it’s condolences to the families of the deceased and thanked the healthcare workers who treated the patients”, Mkhize said.

The current number of recoveries sits at 21 311, which translates to a recovery rate of 52.24%.
