Businessman and pioneer of the business fraternity, Richard Maponya sadly passed on in the early hours of Monday morning (6 January 2020) following a brief illness – shortly after his 99th birthday.
Known as Ntate Maponya and “Soweto’s most humble giant”, the business icon has successfully navigated his way through business and politics, and popularly known for opening Soweto’s largest mall Maponya Mall in 2007, after acquiring land for it in 1994.
Maponya recently raised his concerns about the low employment rate in the country, and that he was planning to open an academy to train the youth on how to be entrepreneurs.
Personalities expressed their heartfelt condolences and shared the great impact the icon had on their lives.
This picture was taken in 2011 when I started @DitshegoMedia in a bachelor's flat in Joburg CBD. Dr Richard Maponya was kind enough to take time off to offer me business advice. He planted the seeds for the next generation of African entrepreneurs. #RIPRichardMaponya pic.twitter.com/BJ8VdfiJQF

It’s the end of an era.
Very reminiscent of the day we lost Bab’ Max Maisela.
These were the true & original doyens. They wrote their own rule book because they were not allowed to be on the sports field.

*record scratch, yes… she really said “JUNGLE.”
Tweeps told Charlotte to “come correct” and asked Crosby which South Africa she was referring to as Mzansi is no jungle.
Likewise, Maftown rapper Cassper Nyovest wouldn’t let this one slide and joined in to further comment:
Amasimba!!!! What Jungle wena Charlotte ? Come correct!!!! Africa is not jungle!!!! https://t.co/JV3HcmDoz5
