Proteas head coach, Shukri Conrad, feels that the world has not seen the best of his Proteas team despite their convincing performance at Lord’s last week that saw them win the World Test Championship title.

The Proteas beat the old foe, Australia by five wickets, an Australian side currently ranked No 1 in the world in the ICC rankings.

Conrad and his team were greeted by South Africans from all walks of life at the OR Tambo International Airport when they touched down from London on Wednesday morning after they ended a 27-year-old long ICC trophy drought.

However, Conrad believes that this is not the ceiling for his side.

“We won comfortably in the end, and I still don’t think we played as well as we can play. I mean, Aiden’s (Markram) probably played his best Test knock. I don’t think South Africa’s seen a better Test innings. KG (Ngidi), Lungi (Ngidi), all of these,” Conrad said.

“I can name the guys that have performed in this Test match, but there’s so much else sitting in this change-room that scares me. It excites me at the same time as to where we can go with this group. I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years.”

The team will now have to shift their focus to a two match Test series against neighbours Zimbabwe in Bulawayo which starts next month. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
