Godongwana tells critics he’s not going anywhere

Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, has rebutted critics calling for his resignation, saying that he has no intention of vacating his office.

“That decision does not lie with me; it lies with the President. The President understands the nature of the challenges in dealing with this problem,” he said.

Godongwana’s comments come amid weeks of pressure for him to resign over the Value-Added Tax (VAT) hike controversy.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria, the Finance Minister didn’t entertain, much, the calls and announced that the revised 2025 Budget will be tabled on the 21st of May.

He acknowledged that the process has been trying to find a middle ground has been messy.

“There are lessons to be learnt, for cabinet, for the legislature and for ourselves,” he said.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the DA were at the forefront of the calls for his head, which ANC secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, has labeled as pollical posturing.

Veteran economist, Duma Gqubule, however, differs with Mbalula and also believes that Godongwana has overstayed his welcome.

He alleges that his team at Treasury is also incompetent.
