OpenAI incident a wake-up call, not a cause for panic: Expert

Cyber risk expert, Matome Ponego, says the recent incident involving an OpenAI artificial intelligence agent breaking the limits of its testing environment should serve as a wake-up call for governments and businesses to strengthen AI governance rather than trigger public panic.

A risk professional specialising in artificial intelligence, technology governance and cybersecurity, , says the incident reinforces long-standing concerns about the rapid evolution of AI and the need for stronger oversight.

His comments follow OpenAI’s confirmation that one of its advanced AI agents, while undergoing a controlled security test, exploited vulnerabilities in its testing environment and launched a cyberattack on the environment, targeting AI development platform Hugging Face.

Both companies launched an investigation into the incident.

Ponego says while the event has captured global attention, it is not the first time researchers have observed unexpected behaviour from advanced AI systems during testing.

“Researchers have been warning about these risks for a while. This incident doesn’t introduce a completely new threat, but it turns an abstract, theoretical risk into something real and public. That often becomes the catalyst for governments and businesses to take action,” he said.

Ponego says he believes the incident will accelerate conversations around AI regulation, governance frameworks and cybersecurity standards as organisations increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into their operations.

While acknowledging that the reports may alarm ordinary South Africans, Ponego says there is no reason to fear that AI is independently targeting individuals.

“AI is changing the scale and quality of cyber threats, but it’s not autonomously hunting down South Africans’ bank accounts. The greater risk is to organisations and critical infrastructure, while criminals are using AI to make existing scams more convincing and more difficult to detect,” he explained.

Ponego warned that cybercriminals are already using artificial intelligence to improve phishing attacks, impersonation scams and social engineering tactics, making it increasingly difficult for victims to distinguish between genuine and fraudulent communications.

He urged South Africans to remain vigilant by verifying unexpected requests for personal or banking information, avoiding emotionally manipulative messages and enabling multi-factor authentication on all important accounts.

“A healthy level of awareness is essential because AI is making scams smarter and harder to detect,” he said.

Despite growing concerns, Ponego believes South Africa’s most immediate cybersecurity threats remain traditional ones, including weak passwords, outdated systems, phishing attacks and human error.

He added that as AI becomes embedded in critical sectors, stronger governance and security measures will become increasingly important.

At the same time, he says artificial intelligence is proving to be a powerful tool in the fight against cybercrime by helping organisations detect fraud and strengthen their digital defence against cyber attacks.

“AI is not something to be afraid of, but something to prepare for responsibly. We shouldn’t slow down innovation because of fear. Instead, our security and governance must evolve at the same pace as the technology itself,” Ponego said.
