The Gauteng Department of Education has called on learners at Tiyelelani Secondary School in Soshanguve, Tshwane, to return to class on Thursday, following a second consecutive day of disruptions sparked by serious allegations against a teacher.

Teaching and learning at the school came to a halt after claims surface that a teacher had sexually assaulted and impregnated a Grade 9 learner.

The unrest began on Monday, with outraged learners and community members demanding swift action.

It is further alleged that the school principal was aware of the incident but failed to take appropriate steps, intensifying public anger.

The school’s bus driver is also accused of being in an inappropriate relationship with a learner.

Officials from the Department visited the school on Wednesday and confirmed that three individuals linked to the alleged misconduct have been identified.

“Three educators have been identified for alleged ill-treatment of learners, sexual assault, and ill treatment of parents. To manage tensions and ensure stability, these educators have been preliminarily transferred to the district office while the Department conducts its enquiry,” said Department spokesperson Steve Mabona.

He says the School Governing Body (SGB) will meet with parents soon to discuss the concerns raised by learners.

However, it remains to be seen if scholars will heed to the call after some expressed frustration.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it is monitoring the situation.

“The Commission can confirm that it was at Tiyelelani Secondary School today to assess the situation and its impact on the exams currently taking place. The Commission can confirm that it spoke to community members who were present as well as the representatives from the GDE who confirmed that they are currently investigating the allegations,” the commission said in a statement.

The EFF has called for the alleged sexual misconduct allegations to be thoroughly.
