Some South Africans have accused afro-soul singer and songwriter, Simphiwe Dana, of crashing out after she claimed that her African culture inspired hairstyles, are being appropriated without crediting her.
The Zandisile hitmaker, who is popular for her conscious music and signature hairstyles, took to X today, to express her frustration accusing Shaka iLembe production team and actress Nomzamo Mbatha of stealing her hairstyles and not crediting her for it.

The 45-year-old later posted a picture of Mbatha further expressing her disappointment.

The conversation about African hair and styling dates back to ancient times as hair has sometimes been used as a way to display a form of status, self-expression, cultural identity and political statement.
Some research suggests that twisting and braiding of hair originated around 3500 BC in Namibia.

Social media users responded by poking fun at the singer for claiming a hairstyle and look that has also been donned by the late legendary Miriam Makeba, as the songstress was known for going against Western beauty standards. Makeba frequently wore natural hairstyles, including the Afro and variations of braids.

What I’ve learnt today is that I too, should’ve come to social media to attack Ms Dana instead of talking to those responsible for my credit. This was an adaptation of my Headpiece.🤍✨ https://t.co/iOC438ljdY pic.twitter.com/ijsJxUmaVk

A period piece’s hair department dedicated time and care to research in order to stay true the aesthetic of the period being depicted. The star of the show incorporates said aesthetic as part of promoting the show. That’s what we’re calling appropriation? Sensational! https://t.co/sggMvIZBZz pic.twitter.com/RS36lmD1ja
