Ekurhuleni Mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has finally heeded to Thembisa residents’ demand and temporarily suspended the controversial fixed R126 electricity tariff charge that has the public up in arms.
Xhakaza took the decision shortly after convening an emergency meeting with stakeholders following the chaotic scenes that played out in the metro over the past two days.
Speaking to protesters outside Rabasotho Hall, the mayor assured residents that the decision will remain while the city reviews the issue.
Xhakaza further explained that the municipal tariffs are guided by Eskom’s pricing structure, which is approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).
While action has been taken, he appealed to residents to continue signing a petition expressing their grievance.
“We will temporarily suspend the fixed R126 tariffs, but please continue with the petition so it can allow us to take it to the mayoral committee in the Council.”
