The Judicial Conduct Tribunal investigating alleged sexual misconduct by Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge has been adjourned and will reconvene on the 21st of October for oral arguments from both parties.
The tribunal wrapped up earlier than expected on Thursday after the cross-examination of Mbenenge by evidence leader, advocate Salome Scheepers, concluded.
Mbenenge’s legal representative, advocate Muzi Sikhakhane, informed the tribunal that the defence had no further witnesses to call.
Scheepers also indicated she had no further questions for the Judge President.
The final day of testimony began with tension, as Mbenenge sharply criticised the evidence leader’s conduct, calling it “unacceptable and unpleasant.”
Scheepers resumed her cross-examination following her request on Wednesday for additional time to prepare around the events of 14 and 15 July 2021.
During his testimony, Mbenenge told the tribunal that he had tried to contact his accuser, Andiswa Mengo, in an attempt to reconcile, but she had already blocked him.
He further claimed to have approached people close to Mengo, asking them to persuade her to stop exposing what he described as private flirtatious messages.
Mbenenge maintains that he never sent any explicit images to Mengo. Written by Lebohang Ndashe
