Banyana Banyana got the defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title off to a winning start following a 2-0 victory over Ghana at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.
A penalty by Linda Mothlalo as well as a Jermaine Seoposenwe strike gave Desiree Ellis’ charges the lead in the first half, which Banyana did very well to defend after the break following a second-half onslaught by the Black Girls.
The victory sees Banyana go top of Group C, with Mali and Tanzania still to play.
Banyana will be commended for keeping their focus and getting the job done after not having a favourable build up to the tournament due to boardroom issues.
Last week, petroleum company, Sasol, announced that it had stopped sponsoring the women’s national team after they could not come to terms with the South African Football Association (Safa) on a new deal.
Banyana’s next match is on Friday against Tanzania. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
