Banyana Banyana coach, Dr Desiree Ellis, named her 26-player squad for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament to be hosted in Morocco next month.
Banyana are the defending champions, having won the tournament back in 2022.
They are in group C, alongside Mali, Tanzania, and Ghana and will open their tournament on the 7th of July against Ghana.
The coach has also announced a team of co-captains, similar to 2022 with midfielders Refiloe Jane and Amogelang Motau, as well as defender Lebohang Ramalepe, sharing the responsibilities.
Jane returns to the national set-up, having enjoyed regular playing time at TS Galaxy. Hildah Magaia, Linda Motlhalo and Andile Dlamini are also present to provide vital experience providing continuity from the 2022 group.
Forward, Jermaine Seoposenwe, who announced that she will be retiring after the tournament, is also in the final squad.
The less experienced players in the team are 17-year-old JVW starlet, Bonolo Mokoma, Adrille Mibe of UJ (University of Johannesburg) and Ronell Donnelly from UWC (University of the Western Cape).
The team will leave for Morocco on Tuesday morning. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
