The mother of slain six-year-old, Amantle Samane, says the news of Cwecwe’s rape teared old wounds, bringing back the excruciating pain of her daughter’s untimely passing.

Samane was raped and killed in Orlando, Soweto, in October last year.

Her half-naked body was found in a shack near her home, belonging to murder accused, Pethe Simao.

The 24-year-old Mozambican national is on trial for rape, murder, and the violation of the Immigration Act as the horrifying nature of his alleged crimes continues to send shockwaves through the community of Orlando.

The Samane family’s spokesperson, Brenda Mjiyako, says the six-year-old’s mother is not coping.

“The mother’s remaining children have received counselling but we can’t say they are fine, especially the first and second born who went to the scene and saw everything when the incident happened,” adds Mjiyako.

The family says it is now pinning its hope on the justice system as the matter has now been transferred to the High Court in Johannesburg for trial.

Pre-trial proceedings have been scheduled for May 9.

NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, says they believe they have a strong case against the 24-year-old.

“We are ready to present a formidable case before the high court. We have concluded the process of consultation and have lined up our witnesses,” she adds.

Mjonodwane has also assured the family that justice will prevail.

As the Samane family seeks accountability for the unimaginable loss they’ve suffered, calls for justice for little Cwecwe, who was raped, allegedly at her school premises, continue. A national shutdown is planned as pressure mounts for the police to close the net on her rapist. Written by Lindiwe Mpanza
