The South African Police Service (SAPS) says it has obtained authority from the NPA to access Cwecwe’s medical records as investigations into the tragic incident intensify.

Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says the statements from the doctors who treated the minor are very critical in getting to the bottom of this case.

Scores of relentless young people have been protesting across the country, demanding justice for Cwecwe who was raped in October last year, allegedly, while waiting for her transport at school.

Yesterday, national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, roped in the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Investigations (FCS) unit to bolster and oversee the ongoing matter.

Head of the unit, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele, is expected to meet with the school’s principal, Jaco Pieterse, and two other people who have been identified as people of interest.

Pieterse came under fire for allegedly delaying investigations by previously refusing to give his DNA samples, which are now with police.

Bergview College’s management has on the other hand filed papers seeking to urgently interdict the deregistration of the school after the Eastern Cape Education MEC, Fundile Gade, issued the school with a notice of deregistration on Friday.

Following backlash on the principal and mounting calls for his arrest, the police have called for responsible reporting on this sensitive matter.

Cwecwe’s story has given voice to many other mothers and victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), with one also opening up about her daughter’s ordeal.

The mother took to social media sharing how her 15-year-old was raped, allegedly, by a teacher at Curro Nelspruit school.
