Late comedian, actor and writer, Ebenhaezer Dibakwane’s family says it hopes his passing will serve as a reminder to all South Africans of the need to look out for each other while not neglecting personal mental health.
The family confirmed in a statement that the 31-year-old creative took his own life following years of battling depression.
“Poignantly, Ebby was well-known for the talent of making people laugh, and yet he struggled with depression for a number of years,” it says.
The 31-year-old has also previously opened up about his challenge.
His family advises those who are struggling with mental health to seek professional help.
“Anyone struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts is encouraged to contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) at 0800 567 567, toll free,” the Dibakwane family adds.
The comedian will be laid to rest on Friday in Mbombela.
His memorial service will be held at the Bioscope in Johannesburg tomorrow.
Dibakwane hailed as a friend to many, rose to fame after winning the Newcomer Award at the 6th annual Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards in 2016. He subsequently won a second Savanna Comics’ Choice Award for Intermediate Comedian of The Year as well as two other Comic’s Choice nominations.
He was also recognised for his writing skills when he was nominated for a SAFTA for Best Achievement in Scriptwriting.
