Some traditional healers have expressed relief following the release of controversial sangoma, Makhotso “Gogo Maweni” Mofokeng, on bail – saying they’re glad she’s a free woman.
Maweni was released on R5 000 bail earlier after a brief appearance at the Protea Magistrate’s Court.
She faces charges of assault and grievous bodily harm for allegedly attacking a relative of her ex-boyfriend in 2019.
Maweni’s bail judgment was met with a sigh of relief from the accused dock, accompanied by cheers from her supporters.

The courtroom was packed with Maweni’s followers, many of whom are fellow traditional healers.
Sangoma, Andile Dlamini, who traveled from KwaZulu-Natal to support the expectant mother of four, believes justice will prevail despite the charges.
“You would always support your loved one in such situations. Whether or not she’s guilty is up to the court to decide,” he told YNews.
During the bail hearing, it emerged that Maweni had failed to disclose previous serious criminal charges, including a fraud conviction and a charge of drunk and negligent driving. Magistrate, Rozelle Khiye, added charges for providing false evidence to the court as a result.
Maweni’s bail conditions include not intimidating the complainant and surrendering her passport.
She returns to court on the 11th of next month.
