Proteas fast bowler, Anrich Nortje, has been ruled out of the remainder of the third season of the SA20 as well as next month’s ICC Champions Trophy due to a back injury.
Just mere days after being announced in the Proteas’ 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan, scans have revealed the extent of his injury, prompting Cricket South Africa (CSA) to make the announcement this afternoon.
The 31-year-old has a long history of injuries curtailing his participation in major ICC events.
He missed the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales with a fractured thumb and was ruled out of a second successive World Cup in India in 2023, due to a persistent back problem.
He has since only played a limited amount of cricket for the Warriors domestically, and in the Abu Dhabi T10 last month.
The most likely replacement for Nortjé is Titans and Joburg Super Kings fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee.
The 24-year-old was Nortjé’s replacement at the last World Cup in India too, and filled the gap more than adequately, finishing as the Proteas’ leading wicket-taker at the tournament. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
