Independent Political Analyst, Goodenough Mashego, says the challenges facing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which have resulted in the mass exodus of leaders, is a reflection of who is steering the ship.

Mashego says some of the top leaders who ditched the EFF for uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party did so after realising that the party did not offer them any growth opportunities under Julius Malema’s leadership.

He draws similarities with the ANC, saying after the Freedom Charter was adopted in the 50s the party also split. Those who believed in the charter stayed, while those who preferred the push for Pan Africanism only – left.

However, he emphasises that the Pan Africanists’ departure from the ANC was based on principle, while with the EFF it’s not even an ideological shift, but a protest against Malema’s iron fist style of leadership.

Mashego’s comments are in response to concerns over the departure of the former chairperson of the Red Berets, advocate Dali Mpofu, for MKP.

In an exclusive interview with the public broadcaster’s political editor, the advocate who has remained Jacob Zuma’s long-time legal representative, expressed his confidence in uMkhonto weSizwe Party, saying it resonates with his passion for the much-needed unity among black people.

Mpofu said he believes MKP is the only party that has stuck to its intension of fostering the unity he also desires.

Mashego says Mpofu’s exit speaks to how Malema’s leadership style doesn’t only stifle those who aspire for top leadership positions, but everyone within the party.

The EFF has lost several of its high-profile leaders to MKP ahead of its conference in December. They include the co-founder of the party, Floyd Shivambu, and former Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

Responding to Mpofu’s departure, Malema posted a message on X that many have read as him suggesting that the party’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and another leader will be exiting the red berets soon.

The post ends with him saying they stand strong despite the mass exodus.

Some on social media have responded to his post accusing him of being petty, while others have expressed their confidence in the party.
