Proteas Women allrounder, Annerie Derksen, is encouraged by the ICC’s decision to increase the overall prize money for next month’s T20 Women’s Cricket World to $7.96 million.
Derksen was speaking after the Proteas Women clinched their 3-match T20I series against Pakistan following their 8-wicket victory at the Multan Cricket Stadium.
“I’m not one to do it for the money but I think it’s awesome. I think we train the same (as the men), we play the same,” she said.
“I think the women’s game has really grown but it’s a reality that the men’s game brings more money than us, but I think it’s a great initiative from the ICC.”
On Tuesday, the ICC announced that the winners of the tournament will receive $2.34 million, more than double the $1 million awarded to Australia for winning the previous edition of the competition last year.
India received $2.45 million earlier this year for winning the men’s T20 World Cup, which handed out a total of $11.25 million. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
