Cultural expert, Professor Musa Xulu, has moved to quell critics’ concerns over the Zulu monarch’s call on his people to embrace other cultures who want to be Zulu, saying by doing so, the Zulu nation would grow.
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, was speaking at the opening of the two-day annual reed dance, known as Umkhosi woMhlanga in KwaNongoma, on Saturday.
This raised eyebrows of some from the Zulu kingdom, with critics slamming King Misuzulu kaZwelithini over this, saying he was seeking to dilute the Zulu nation.
However, Professor Xulu, says there’s nothing untoward with the king’s utterances as there’s been a category of Zulus known as uZulu oMhlophe since the days of iNkosi uShaka kaSenzangakhona.
He says in 1991 the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi referred to the then-prime minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher, as a good Zulu.
The cultural expert says the isiZulu identity is open to everyone and is a very federal cultural identity.
Professor Xulu citing the black people from West Africa, who live in France and are regarded as French as an example, says it is important to remember that culture is fluid and never static.
